The Danger of Earthquakes
An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the Earth’s surface. It is a dangerous natural disaster that happens without any warning. Inside the Earth, deep rocks move and shift against each other, which causes the ground above to shake violently. When a strong earthquake hits a city, it can cause massive damage in just a few seconds. High-rise buildings, houses, and bridges can collapse, trapping people under the rubble. Roads crack open, and electricity and water lines break down completely. This leads to a huge loss of many innocent lives and valuable property.
To stay safe during an earthquake, people must not panic. If you are inside a room, you should quickly follow the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” rule. Taking shelter under a strong wooden table or bed can protect your head from falling objects. If you are outdoors, you should move to an open area far away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
Governments and engineers also have a major role to play in safety. Builders must follow strict construction rules to make houses and offices earthquake-proof. We cannot stop this natural force, but proper awareness, public safety training, and strong buildings can surely reduce the damage and save countless lives in the future.
