Introduction: Bangladesh is a land of rivers. Her lands are also low-lying. So floods visit this country almost every year. It causes great damage to men and property. It is the most dangerous calamity in Bangladesh.

What flood is: The excessive overflow of water that carries away houses, uproots trees and plants, and damages crops is called a flood.

Causes of floods: There are many causes of floods. They are heavy rainfall, tidal waves, terrible storms, earthquakes, snow melt, etc. We generally think that a flood is a curse of God. But it is mainly caused by heavy showers of rain. During the monsoon, the heavy downpour swells the river water. This excess water overflows the banks of rivers and causes floods.

Effects: Flood causes heavy damage to our lives and property. It washes away villages and towns. Crops are damaged, and trees are uprooted. Human beings, cattle, and other domestic animals pass their days with unlimited suffering. Many people are rendered homeless. The people suffer from a lack of pure drinking water. The roads go underwater, and all the communications are suspended. People take shelter in the high roads, schools, and colleges.

After effects of flood: The After effects of flood are very dangerous. People don’t get pure drinking water. So various kinds of water-borne diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, and typhoid break out in an epidemic form in flood-affected areas. As a result, many people die from them. Famine also breaks out in those areas. Prices of daily necessities have highly up significantly. The farmers face a new problem due to the destruction of the cattle.

Positive Effects of Floods: There are several positive effects of floods. It brings silt and makes the land fertile.

The people of Bangladesh can’t forget the terrible floods that occurred in 1954, 1955, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1980, 1984, 1987, 1988, and 1998. The flood of 1988 was dangerous. The century’s worst and dangerous flood occurred in 1998. It lasted for more than two months. The whole country went underwater, and standing crops were damaged. But the people and the government faced this calamity with patience and courage.

Conclusion: Flood is a national problem of Bangladesh. So, our government should take permanent steps to minimise losses caused by floods.

The overflow of water, causing loss to life and property, is called a flood. Flood is a common natural calamity. It occurs almost every year in our country. It also appears in many other countries of the world. But it is the most dangerous calamity in Bangladesh.

The causes of floods are many. Heavy rainfall is the main cause of it. During the monsoon, it rains heavily. When the rivers cannot hold water, they overflow the banks and cause floods. Besides, cyclones, tidal bores, melting of snow, deforestation, etc, are greatly responsible for floods.

Flood causes heavy damage to our lives and properties. The sufferings of the people know no bounds. Houses are destroyed, cattle are washed away, crops are damaged, and trees are uprooted. Hundreds of people become homeless. The people suffer for want of food, clothes, medical treatment, medicine, and pure drinking water. The roads go underwater. Sometimes communication is cut off. The flood of 1988 was dangerous. The flood of 1998 broke the records of the past. The affected people had to suffer greatly.

The after-effects of floods are more serious. Famine spreads out. The prices of necessary things go up. Many dangerous diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery, etc., break out in an epidemic form.

Flood does some good, too. It brings silt and makes the land fertile. It also carries away waste materials and makes our environment clean.

Some steps, like the dredging of rivers and the construction of dams and embankments, can be taken up. Relief camps have to be set up to distribute relief goods among the victims. A rehabilitation programme has to be taken. We should plant more and more trees.

We must control the flood at any cost. It is not possible to stop the flood totally, but much can be done to control it. All possible steps should be taken to remove the sufferings of the affected people. It is certain that we are bold enough to face the floods.
